Why 'I feel confident' is the wrong test for AZ-104

You need evidence that you are consistently strong where the exam actually spends its points, which is compute and networking.

Feeling confident on single-answer multiple choice tells you almost nothing about how you will handle a 'select all that apply' NSG question under a ticking clock. One good practice score proves almost nothing. Question sets vary, and any single session can land on your strong topics by chance. What you are looking for is a stable pattern across several independent attempts, not a personal best you screenshot and never repeat.
A practical bar: your last three to four measured practice sessions (each a real block of 20 or more questions, not a five-question warm-up) should all sit comfortably above passing, with a small spread between your best and worst. If your scores swing from 62 to 88 percent depending on the day, you are not ready, you are volatile. Volatility usually means one or two domains are dragging you down and getting masked by strong domains on your good days.
- Ready signal: three or more recent sessions clustered above your target, low variance, and you can explain why the wrong answers were wrong without looking.

Signal 3: You can do the labs, not just recognize the answers
AZ-104 rewards hands-on muscle memory. The single most common reason capable people fail is studying passively: watching a course or reading explanations until the correct answer looks familiar, without ever doing the task themselves. Recognition is not the same as ability, and the exam's scenario questions are designed to catch the difference.
The honest test is simple. Pick a task and do it in the portal from a blank start with no walkthrough open. If you can complete the core AZ-104 tasks unaided, you have real readiness. If you need to peek at a guide, that topic is not ready yet, however good it looks on a multiple-choice question.
- Create two VNets, peer them, and verify connectivity, then lock traffic down with an NSG and confirm a blocked port is genuinely blocked.
- Deploy a Virtual Machine Scale Set with a CPU-based autoscale rule and watch it scale, and deploy the same VM from an ARM or Bicep template.
- Assign RBAC roles at management group, subscription, resource group, and resource scope, and observe inheritance.
- Create a storage account, generate a SAS token, then restrict it with a firewall rule and a private endpoint.
- Stand up a Recovery Services vault, back up a VM, and perform a restore, and configure a metric alert with an action group.
If you can walk through that list without help, your practice scores mean far more, because they are backed by ability rather than pattern-matching. If you cannot, no practice percentage should convince you that you are ready.
Signal 4: You have passed a full-length, timed mock under real conditions
Short drills build knowledge, but they do not test stamina, pacing, or how you behave when a hard question eats four minutes. The real exam is a sustained 100-to-120-minute effort, and plenty of well-prepared candidates lose points late simply because they never rehearsed the endurance of it.
Before you book, complete at least one full-length timed mock in one sitting, in exam-style format, and pass it comfortably. Do it without pausing, without looking anything up, and without your notes open. - Pacing: you finish with a sensible time buffer, rather than either racing or running out of clock.

If your timed full-length result is well above passing and your pacing held, that is one of the strongest single signals on this list. If you have only ever done untimed practice in small chunks, you have not yet tested the thing the exam actually measures.
Signal 5: You read multi-response and case-study questions cleanly
A surprising share of AZ-104 losses are reading errors, not knowledge gaps. Multiple-response questions ('select two', 'select all that apply') punish a right idea paired with one extra wrong pick, and case studies bury the decisive detail in a wall of background text. You can know the material and still bleed points if you process these formats poorly.
- On multiple-response items, you identify exactly how many answers are required and resist adding a plausible-but-wrong extra, because a single wrong selection can cost the whole question.
- On case studies, you read the scenario tabs first, extract the constraints that actually drive the answer, and remember you generally cannot return to a case study once you leave it.

If all five are true, stop studying to feel safer and book the exam, ideally within a week or two so your peak does not go stale. Waiting longer once you are genuinely ready tends to add anxiety, not points.
